About This Place

Situated conveniently at 39 W Main St in the bustling heart of Alhambra, The Bay Cafe offers a vibrant Cantonese dining experience that artfully blends traditional flavors with a casual, approachable atmosphere. Renowned for its extensive menu, this restaurant is a true gem for both locals and visitors seeking an authentic taste of Cantonese cuisine at wallet-friendly prices.

The Bay Cafe’s culinary offerings shine with signature dishes like the aromatic Beef with Ginger & Green Onion (薑蔥牛), which boasts tender slices of beef infused with the warm, zesty zing of ginger and fresh scallions. Seafood lovers are equally spoiled by choices such as the Seafood Fried Rice topped with luxe salmon roe and the sumptuous Deep Fried Whole Fish (乾煎龍利魚) that arrives perfectly crisp on the outside while retaining juicy flakiness within. For those who savor comforting classics, the Beef Stew Wonton Noodle Soup or the silky-smooth Hainan Chicken with Rice (海南雞飯) deliver soulful, satisfying bowls that warm both body and mind.

One standout feature is their thoughtful variety of curry dishes, ranging from spicy Curry Beef Stew (咖喱牛腩) and Curry Chicken (咖喱雞), to the more adventurous Curry Seafood (咖喱海鮮), all bursting with rich, deeply layered flavors that satisfy cravings for hearty, spiced comfort food. Complementing the meals is an appealing assortment of specialty sodas—like Kumquat, Lychee, and Honey Lemon Soda—served chilled in generous 36-ounce portions that perfectly balance the savory dishes.

The dining atmosphere embraces a casual, no-frills vibe with a hint of nostalgic charm, popular especially among patrons who appreciate quick service and big portions without a steep price tag. Customers often praise the generous $2.50 drink specials, including classic Hong Kong-style milk tea and lemon tea, which come with free refills in sizable sealed cups—perfect for those wanting to savor their beverages slowly. While the restaurant can be a bit understaffed at times, the front-of-house team consistently receives kudos for their friendly and patient service, adding a welcoming human touch to the experience.

Though some reviewers note that The Bay Cafe leans towards a lighter, less oily style than traditional Cantonese fare, this makes for a pleasant surprise for diners seeking flavorful yet balanced dishes. The menu’s diversity—from the garlicky Cauliflower with Sliced Beef (珊瑚菜花炒牛肉) to the sizzling Pork Spareribs and the savory Pan Fried Squid in XO Sauce (xo鮮魷)—ensures there is something delightful for every palate.

Ultimately, The Bay Cafe stands as an inviting culinary destination for guests who appreciate quality Cantonese flavors presented with warmth and value. Whether you're meeting friends for a casual lunch, grabbing a quick dinner, or indulging in an affordable brunch, this cafe serves up satisfying plates and beverages that make each visit feel like a comforting return to familiar tastes, enhanced by friendly service and a convenient location near Alhambra’s Main and Garfield intersection.

This cafe has a lot of drinks options. Kind of like a Boba drink cafe and Cantonese style Chinese restaurant. Parking is not too bad even on weekends. This restaurant is understaffed so be super patient. The waiters here are nice when we visit We just need to wait a bit. Their $2.50 drinks(HK style milk tea, lemon tea, etc) has free refills that come in generous big plastic cups sealed with plastic film to avoid spill like you normally get from boba cafe. The food that we tried was not bad but there is nothing to rave about. The lunch specials are a great value.

Not my mom's first choice for lunch special but close and easy. $10.99 dishes, 9am-930pm all day special (dine-in) in Alhambra. It's decent, if you ignore some sanitary issues. The chicken, and Chinese cauliflower are popular worth it choices. Food isn't too salty and oily which is nice. I liked that this place was on the lighter side of taste unlike other canto, or regional Chinese cuisine places with lunch special. For $10.50+ and comes with rice, it's hard to complain at that price with the portion size they offer. For Friday lunch time, it seems crowded and filled with seniors like my mom who loves deals over quality at times, and non-Chinese or tourist looking eaters....similar to ppl I would see at Mama Lu's in mpk. We've been here before but guess I forgot it. I would place it like a 3.5 stars and just rounded up because of it's amazing prices. The SO was craving fried rice. This place is not a fried rice place. But I did enjoy that it wasn't greasy or overly salty. If anything, it needed more salt. My kinda dirty napkin and cup were a turn off. I flipped my clean looking napkin to find that it was a little dirty in the back. I guess they aren't wasteful? I'm just hoping everything else is clean enough?

The price is awesome. Each dish can be low as $6. We had Brunch combo for $10.99. It’s not a 5 star dish, but the price, it certainly exceeds its value. The location is close to Main Street and Garfield Ave where it is the center of Alhambra area. This restaurant provides both authentic Chinese local food or typical American dish. U won’t go wrong to dine in this place. Because many elder Chinese already know this place, don’t get surprised if u see many elder Chinese dine with you.

Food was average, and the restaurant wasn’t very clean . But at just $11 per dish , it’s very affordable—great for a quick, budget-friendly meal. Just a heads-up: this isn’t authentic Hong Kong-style Cantonese food, but more like northeastern Chinese-style cooking . For example, the tomato and egg dish was a simple northern-style version—mostly scrambled eggs with just a couple of tomato pieces (can see photo). The beef with scallions and onions had a slightly sour flavor, which might not be for everyone. That said, the staff were quite friendly and helpful , and the food wasn’t bad—it just didn’t match my personal taste.

Feels like typical Hong Kong style restaurant. Place gets loud when full. Food is great, and price is very reasonable. Pork chop with honey garlic is very crisp with honey sauce. Service is good, and our food came fast. Free parking structure is available next to the restaurant. We came early for lunch, and there are empty seats, but when we are done, place is full and need to wait for seats.

made myself a deal: if this place didn’t charge me for extra rice, I’d give it 5 stars—here we are! My fiancé and I have been coming for a month and already visited 4–5 times. It’s quickly become our go-to spot thanks to consistently well-made food and fast, friendly service. There’s sometimes a slight language barrier since it’s authentic Chinese, but simple phrases or pointing work fine. The 32oz Hong Kong-style lemon tea is a must—only $2.50 with unlimited refills, and they even let you take it to go. The menu is extensive, the portions are fair, and they don’t nickel-and-dime you, which is rare these days. The only downside was a 30-minute wait for takeout once, but the Mapo Tofu was so good it made up for it. Restrooms are a bit rough, but that just adds to the authentic vibe. Great food, great value, and a new favorite spot for us!

After seeing a lot of good reviews on Yelp, we decided to give this restaurant a try. The food didn’t disappoint and the service was excellent despite being short handed. Weekend is busy here. The wait during lunch hour can be long, but the turn over is fast. The prices are very reasonable and portion for the food is very generous. Most of the lunch dishes are between $7-$9. With just $1.99, you can have a large cup (26oz) of your favorite milk tea or ice lemon tea. The flavors of the food is up to par with the authentic HK restaurants. The taste is full of wok Hei. The mandarin port rib was my favorite. The pork meat was very tender and the sweet and sour sauce was truly delicious. The pineapple bun was a bit disappointing as the cookie topping was soft and felt apart. But the buns were huge compared to the ones from other HK cafes. We definitely will be back to try more of their food.
